Fighting Pipelines Is Now Dangerous

Pipeline Resistance Dangers and Quashing Dissent in Florida–Why We Must Stop Sabal Trail Anita Stewart / Deep Green Resistance Florida The pipeline broke ground the first week of September 2016. Despite recent articles making it sound like they just began construction, according to some accounts the pipeline is 90-95% complete. The plans for this pipeline were implemented in 2013 to transport fracked gas/methane from various areas up north. We were talking to citizens back then but few heard us and there were almost no stories in the mainstream media. In many places right now, the pipe is already installed and covered with soil. The product from this pipeline is going for export. It will not do anything to help Americans in the way of jobs or lowering energy costs. ...

The Mission to Stop the Sabal Trail Pipeline

Anita Stewart / Deep Green Resistance Florida Fighting a Small Pipeline While the World Is Watching the Big One Stop Sabal Trail Pipeline direct action In the early morning hours of Saturday, November 5th, water protectors from several different camps throughout Florida converged at an “action camp” to begin direct actions and multiple blockades to halt construction of the Sabal Trail Pipeline in Gilchrist County. They stopped the workers for a short time at the Santa Fe River near Gainesville by obstructing the path of trucks driving to the construction site. The pipeline workers, all from out of state were getting ready to bore a hole underneath the Santa Fe River to extend the pipeline to the opposite bank of the river. The blockade culminated in a police presence at the work site, but there were no arrests. At one point the water protectors marched onto the work site with signs. This direct action was planned by local landowners, members of the American Indian Movement, Our Santa Fe River, Earth First! and other groups. ...

First Florida Bear Hunt in 21 Years Draws Support, Derision

IMAGE SOURCE: wildflorida.com Hunters are expected to take to the woods across Central Florida and three other regions of the state Saturday, hoping to kill a Florida black bear during the state’s first bear hunt in 21 years. Facts Rules of the hunt: • Each permit holder is allowed to take one bear, which must weigh at least 100 pounds. • No hunting over bait or with dogs. • Bears must not have cubs. • Weapons allowed are the same as for deer, including bows, crossbows, rifles, pistols, revolvers, shotguns and muzzleloaders. • Hunters must check in within 12 hours of killing a bear. Harvest Objectives: • Central Florida: 100 • North Florida: 100 • South Florida: 80 • Eastern Panhandle: 40 After a brief legal battle and amid widespread opposition, black bears will be hunted in four regions, just three years after being removed from the state’s protected species list. Green Sea Turtles Nest in Record Numbers in Florida

IMAGE SOURCE: Destination360.com MIAMI - A record number of endangered green sea turtles nested in the US state of Florida in 2015, suggesting that conservation efforts are paying off, authorities said Friday. Approximately 28,000 nests were discovered across 26 state beaches, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said. Nearly 30 years ago, only 464 green sea turtle nests were documented in the same areas. Read article here: ...

Florida Bay's Algae Bloom is Just Latest Environmental Disaster

The Tamiami Trail was finished in 1928, and environmentalists have been trying to undo the damage ever since. Trailblazers exhibit, courtesy of Jonathan Ullman. Florida Bay, the body of water between the Everglades and the Keys that was once teeming with wildlife, may be on the verge of collapse. Last week, scientists reported that miles of sea grass have died in the bay in recent months, leaving behind a stinky smell and a cloud of yellow sulfide. The die-off is likely to be the start of a larger “toxic algae bloom,” which could bring disastrous effects to one of South Florida’s greatest environmental treasures. ...

Hydraulic Fracturing or Fracking in Florida and Citizens' Efforts to Stop It (Audio)

IMAGE SOURCE: Anita Stewart On MidPoint we looked at hydraulic fracturing in Florida and citizens’ efforts to stop it; joining us on the phone from southwest Florida was Dr. Karen Dwyer, co-founder of the Stonecrab Alliance, an environmental advocacy group. Our in-studio guest was Jennifer Rubiello, state director of Environment Florida. Tuesday in Naples the Board of Collier County Commissioners is meeting and one thing they’ll do is to approve their Legislative Priorities for the county. One priority has to do with Inland Oil Drilling and Fracking. But our guests say that in addition to just proposing some regulations on fracking, the bill by State Senator Garrett Richter ( SB 318) could open up more south Florida land to fracking. They prefer an alternative bill by Senators Darren Soto and Dwight Bullard, SB166, that would ban fracking in Florida. We heard about fracking that has gone on in the past at Hogan Well and about other drilling techniques like acidizing, acid fracking, and high pressure well stimulation. ...

Conservation Group Seeks Injunction to Block October Bear Hunt

IMAGE SOURCE: floridapolitics.com A Seminole County conservation group asked a judge Tuesday to halt Florida’s first bear hunt in 21 years, now scheduled to begin Oct. 24. Speak Up Wekiva filed suit against the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in July over the commission’s decision to allow the hunting of a species that until 2012 was classified as threatened. Now the organization is seeking an emergency temporary injunction blocking the hunt from taking place, arguing that the rules for the hunt are arbitrary and capricious. ...

South Florida's Heat Key to Boom of Python and Cold-Blooded Cousins (Reptiles)

IMAGE SOURCE: DIEDRA LAIRD BY JENNY STALETOVICH jstaletovich@MiamiHerald.com If Florida ever wants to rid itself of Burmese pythons, tegus and other slithery invaders, pray for cold. A new University of Florida study has confirmed what scientists have long suspected: temperature, more than habitat, determines where reptiles invade. Using the kind of risk assessment strategy normally used in business, researchers modeled where invasive lizards and geckos were likely to occur based on native habits, then compared that to where they live in Florida. Temperature, it turns out, creates an invisible barrier. And that means South Florida will likely remain the nation’s hottest spot for all things invasive. ...
